Garlic Bread

You won’t get fresh garlic bread like this in any restaurant. My simple recipe takes just minutes to make… and just minutes to disappear. I like to use thick slices of sourdough but it’s great on Italian ciabatta bread too. Serve it right away and be ready to make more because this stuff is good! - Jenny Jones

Makes: 2 slices

Garlic Bread


  • 2 thick slices of bread
  • 1 Tablespoon trans fat-free margarine or softened butter
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small clove of garlic, crushed
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • pepper to taste
  • 1 Tablespoon parmesan


  1. Leave oven rack in middle. Preheat broiler.
  2. On a small plate using a fork, mash together the margarine or butter, oil, garlic, salt, and pepper.
  3. Spread onto bread slices with a knife.
  4. Top with parmesan.
  5. Place on a foil-lined sheet or a disposable foil baking sheet.
  6. Broil for about 5 minutes. Watch carefully to avoid burning.

    I was confused at first then realized in the U.K we call it grilling although we can alter the temperature , my grill has 5 settings. I am certainly going to try this,

    What is the ovum temperature ?

      The broiler generally does not have a temperature setting. The broiler is when the heat comes only from the top of oven and not from the bottom. Most ovens have just one broil setting and some may have a high and low broil setting. If you have a choice, use the high setting.

    Yum …. this was delicious. I’ve tried many garlic bread recipes. This one was by far, the easiest and best-tasting. I used ciabatta bread. My family loved it.

    When you’re making a demonstration video you should always always say what temperature you are using in the oven. In your video you say middle rack but in your recipe it says broil. I am confused. Did you have a television program many years ago?

      In the video I did say, “Preheat the oven to a broil setting, keep the rack in the middle,” and I repeated it when I put the bread in the oven. In the printable recipe, it also says,”Leave oven rack in middle. Preheat broiler.” The confusion may be because there is no temperature in the broil setting. It’s just using the burners on the upper ceiling of the oven. The temperature can only be controlled by moving the rack closer and farther from the heat, hence, leave the oven rack in the middle (not too close to the burners). I hope that clears it up and yes, I had a daytime talk show in the 90s.
