Orange Sesame Chicken

Orange-Sesame Chicken

Chinese is not always healthy so I created my own recipe that is healthy, quick & easy. Once you do the prep, it cooks in less than 10 minutes and toasted sesame oil is key. Get your rice started first and try a side of steamed broccoli. This is really good! - Jenny Jones

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Makes: 2 servings

Orange-Sesame Chicken

    Main Ingredients:
  • about 3/4 pound boneless chicken breast cut in 1-inch pieces
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • One large orange will provide enough juice
  • 2 teaspoons toasted sesame seeds (optional)
  • Marinade:
  • 1/4 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Sauce:
  • 1/4 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 Tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 Tablespoon cornstarch

  1. Combine marinade ingredients in a small zip lock bag. Add chicken and marinate for 15-20 min.
  2. Combine sauce ingredients in a measuring cup.
  3. Heat oil in a pan on medium–high heat and add chicken, discarding marinade. Sauté 2-3 minutes per side.
  4. Reduce temperature, add sauce & cook 2-3 minutes until thick.
  5. Stir in sesame oil (and toasted sesame seeds if you like).
  6. Serve over rice. A side of steamed broccoli goes really well.

Note: An easy way to steam broccoli is to put it on top of the rice for the last 3-4 minutes of cooking. By the time the rice stands for 10 minutes, the broccoli is done. (Lift the lid quickly, toss in the broccoli, cover back up)

Jenny – should the marinade be drained away before adding chicken to pan?

hi jenny, could I use plain sesame oil instead of toasted sesame oil would it make a difference.

    • ally

Hi jenny,I tried the plain sesame oil ,it turned out really good .this is a really good and easy recipe.

      • Jenny

I didn’t have a chance to reply earlier but I was going to say not to use plain sesame oil, which has very little flavor. Toasted sesame oil is key to this recipe and if you can find it, I think you’ll see the difference. It’s extremely fragrant!

Hi jenny, you were definitely right the toasted sesame oil is way better for this recipe .

Jenny, I would love to see a video for this orange sesame chicken recipe. Mine didn’t turn out quite like yours, so I’d like to see what I did different. My sauce wasn’t the nice color yours has and there wasn’t enough of it. Nice flavor though. So, next time I’ll double the sauce, I think. And maybe I need to do the chicken in batches so that it will brown instead of boil.

    • Margot

Same thing happened to me. Chicken did not brown and neither did the sauce.
      However, it tasted great.

      • Jenny

My chicken does not brown. The sauce might make it look that way but it’s only the sauce that is brown-ish.
